Chilean authorities announced the seizure of more than 100 tonnes of narcotics that had been concealed in timber cargoes destined for Europe, according to French news agency AFP. This is one of the most significant drug seizures recorded in the South American nation.
"Thanks to the joint efforts of the prosecutor's office, maritime police and customs, we have confiscated 1,080 tonnes of timber that contained various types of drugs, which represents a major blow against organised crime in our country," the customs administration stated, according to the agency's report.
Inside the timber, mainly cocaine and ketamine were found. The estimated value of these substances on the European market reaches 8.3 billion dollars, equivalent to just over seven billion euros, according to their statement.
Following a six-month investigation, officials discovered 45 containers originating from Bolivia that were transporting the timber and the drugs. The amount of goods seized could increase, as authorities continue inspecting other suspicious containers.
The operation was coordinated by multiple state institutions. The prolonged investigation made it possible to trace the Bolivian origin of the shipments and detect the presence of illicit substances within the apparently legitimate cargo.
