Son of Carabineros General arrested under Drug Law: mother allegedly attended police station in uniform

Carabineros general under fire following arrest of his son under drug law
According to contrapoderchile.cl, in September 2025, news outlet Factos revealed that a son of Carabineros General María Teresa Araya had been arrested for breaching Law 20,000—the Chilean legislation regulating drug trafficking and consumption—and transferred to the 47th Los Dominicos Police Station.
On that occasion, the Carabineros Communications Team confirmed the procedure. "Indeed, Carabineros of the 47th Los Dominicos Police Station conducted a police procedure in which the person reportedly involved was charged with breaching Law 20,000," the institution stated.
The same institutional source added that "in accordance with current regulations, all evidence was made available to the Public Ministry, the competent body to continue the investigation", and stressed that the role of Carabineros is "to ensure compliance with the law and collaborate with judicial authorities".
New evidence directly implicates General Araya
Nearly a year after the incident, the Contrapoder Chile team gained access to new evidence that would directly implicate General Araya. Sources close to the police force who spoke with this outlet revealed that, during the detention of her son—identified as M.S.A.—General María Teresa Araya presented herself at the police station wearing institutional uniform, with the purpose of ascertaining her son's status and the reasons for his arrest. Her presence generated surprise within the police station.
In light of this information, Contrapoder Chile requested details of the detention under Freedom of Information legislation. Carabineros limited its response to reporting that police report No. 5433 exists and that the case is currently under investigation by the District Prosecutor's Office of Las Condes.
Carabineros and Prosecutor's Office refuse to provide information
The outlet also contacted the Carabineros Communications Team to obtain their account of the detention and to inquire about the alleged appearance of the uniformed general at the 47th Police Station, as well as to investigate whether an administrative inquiry exists regarding the matter. After several attempts, the institution's response was that "they will not be able to access what was requested".
The Eastern Prosecutor's Office, also consulted regarding the case, did not provide a response by the time the article went to print.
General Araya currently part of Carabineros High Command
Inspector General María Teresa Araya currently serves as National Director of Operational Support, a position that places her as an active member of the High Command of Carabineros, the leadership of Chile's uniformed police force.
