Four officials from Chile's Gendarmería were detained on Thursday as part of an investigation into alleged crimes of fraud against the treasury, bribery, criminal association and money laundering, according to reporting by biobiochile.cl.
The operation was led by the Anti-Corruption and Strategic Litigation Unit of the Atacama Regional Public Prosecutor's Office, together with detectives from the Economic Crimes Investigating Brigade (Bridec) and the Money Laundering Investigating Brigade (Brilac) of the PDI. Detention orders were executed during the morning in three regions: Atacama, the Metropolitan Region and Biobío.
The case originated approximately two years ago, when Gendarmería's internal units detected facts that could constitute crimes. "The investigation began approximately two years ago, when the Penitentiary Institution reported to the Atacama Public Prosecutor's Office facts constituting crimes detected by the Internal Security Office and the Criminal Investigation Department," the institution stated in an official declaration.
Gendarmería confirmed that the four detainees belong to the institution and expressed its "absolute rejection and condemnation" of any conduct that deviates from administrative probity. The institution also asserted that it would continue reporting irregularities it detects.
The investigation also inquires into facts linked to the Army and the National Service for Youth Social Reintegration.
The four officials will go before a detention hearing this Friday, a hearing at which the Public Prosecutor's Office will have to present in greater detail the facts alleged against them and their possible degree of participation.
