Truck driver detained after businessman's death on Cartagena route
The businessman and economist Jaime Montero Jaramillo, aged 63, died in the early hours of Tuesday after being struck on the Nuevo Camino Costero, at the height of the Las Pataguas junction, in the Cartagena commune, according to a report by lacuarta.com.
According to available information, Montero Jaramillo stopped his Mercedes Benz on that stretch—which connects Cartagena with Algarrobo—and activated his emergency lights. It is presumed that the businessman got out of the vehicle, possibly to check for some mechanical defect, at which point he was struck by a truck that was travelling on the road.
The impact threw the victim's body approximately seven metres. Montero Jaramillo died at the scene.
The proceedings were handled by the SIAT and SIP of Carabineros. Through a review of traffic camera footage, officers were able to identify the truck's registration plate and vehicle details. With that information, police personnel travelled to a company in San Antonio, where they proceeded to detain the driver.
According to a report by Emol, the accused declared that he had not realised that he had hit a person and claimed that he believed he had struck a dog.
On Wednesday the man will have to appear before the courts.
