The Corps of Retired Generals of Carabineros issued a statement repudiating the homicide of second corporal Cristopher Andrés Aguilera Fernández, aged 30, shot during an inspection procedure in the Las Dunas neighbourhood of Lo Espejo on the afternoon of Sunday 27 September, according to latercera.com.
In the statement, the retired generals expressed "their deepest pain and indignation" over the death of the officer, who—they noted—"gave his life whilst performing a preventive inspection, safeguarding the security and peace of mind of his fellow citizens".
"This crime does not grieve only Carabineros: it grieves and deeply wounds all of Chilean society. When a carabinero is murdered in the performance of his duty, legitimate State authority is attacked, the democratic order is broken and each citizen who aspires to live in peace and under the protection of the law is assailed," they stated.
The organisation emphasised that this moment demands "effective support" for the police institution. "Chile cannot become accustomed nor remain indifferent to the death of those who risk their lives daily to protect us. It is time to close ranks, condemn without ambiguity criminal violence and provide Carabineros with the effective support that the fulfilment of their mission demands," they added.
The statement concluded with a tribute to Corporal Aguilera, whose sacrifice, they indicated, "shall remain as a testament to courage, a vocation for service and love of the Fatherland". The Corps of Retired Generals extended its condolences both to the institution and to the family of the fallen officer.
