A man stole approximately 7 million pesos from a bank branch in the municipality of Ñuñoa, Metropolitan Region, during the afternoon of this Wednesday, according to t13.cl. After committing the robbery, the suspect fled to the Chile-España Metro station in Santiago, where he was intercepted by Carabineros.
Lieutenant Colonel Cristian Tavra explained that the Communications Centre received an alarm activation from Banco Itaú. "We managed to arrive at this location and verify the situation where it was confirmed that this robbery had indeed taken place. We were given the characteristics of the subject and we received communication that he had entered the Chile-España station", declared the officer.
Inside the station, the robber jumped the turnstiles and reached the platform, but failed to board any train. Tavra indicated that Carabineros immediately coordinated with Metro to suspend train movement and cut off any escape route.
Upon being surprised in a corner of the platform, the subject threatened the officers with a knife whilst holding a bag in his other hand. "Police personnel ordered him to desist from his actions and when he failed to do so, Carabineros intervened using chemical irritants to achieve his subdual and simultaneously, he had inflicted a cut to his neck", the lieutenant stated precisely.
The man was subdued and detained at the location. Carabineros provided first aid and transported him to El Salvador Hospital to treat the wound. Preliminary information indicates that he acted alone.
The OS9 and Labocar units of Carabineros are currently carrying out initial investigative procedures in the case. To date, more than 7 million pesos have been recovered.
