Search warrant issued for double homicide in La Cabrera: authorities pursuing alias 'Moncayo'
Bogotá's Metropolitan Police issued a search warrant for Isaac Daniel Rodríguez García, alias 'Moncayo', identified as the alleged perpetrator of the murder of businessman Gustavo Andrés Aponte Fonnegra and his bodyguard, Luis Gabriel Gutiérrez Garzón. The crime took place on 11 February in front of a gymnasium in the La Cabrera neighbourhood, north of the capital.
According to pulzo.com, the Attorney General's Office revealed that the attack was apparently the result of a case of mistaken identity: the actual target was not Aponte Fonnegra, but Olimpo Antonio Oliver Peñaranda, a mining sector businessman who claims to have received threats since 2020.
The attack and the escape
The attack took place at 3:35 p.m. Security cameras in the area recorded a formally dressed man waiting outside the gymnasium. When Aponte and his bodyguard left, the man approached and fired multiple times before fleeing on a motorcycle driven by an accomplice.
Over a hundred cameras allowed authorities to track the attacker's movements and reconstruct the escape route. The images also provided evidence pointing to the involvement of a criminal organisation that had allegedly planned the action in advance.
The case of mistaken identity
The hypothesis of a mistaken target emerged following the capture of Leonel Enrique Llanos Paternina, alias 'Tony', in Villavicencio. The Attorney General's Office maintains that the killers confused Aponte Fonnegra with Peñaranda due to their physical resemblance. Llanos was charged with aggravated homicide and manufacture, trafficking or possession of firearms, charges which he did not accept.
To date, authorities have not established who ordered the crime or clarified how the confusion occurred. Two people allegedly involved remain in detention, whilst the search for alias 'Moncayo' continues actively.
The statement from the businessman mentioned
Olimpo Antonio Oliver Peñaranda issued a statement after being mentioned in the investigative hypothesis. In it, he explained that he has received threats for several years, which he attributes to criminal organisations affected by his mining formalisation projects in southern Bolívar. His claims correspond to his own account and have not been judicially confirmed in relation to this case.
WhatsApp messages as evidence
Among the evidence gathered by the Attorney General's Office are messages from a WhatsApp group called 'Los Gladiadores', in which several aliases—including 'Moncayo'—coordinated details of the attack. The authorities are appealing for public assistance in locating Rodríguez García and in advancing the clarification of the case.
The victim
Gustavo Andrés Aponte Fonnegra headed Arroz Sonora, a company of the Aponte Group with operations in Tolima and Casanare, whose consolidation and expansion he promoted from 1993. He was also a member of the board of directors of the Gustavo Aponte Rojas Foundation, dedicated to social and educational programmes for vulnerable children and families. His death, along with that of his bodyguard, caused widespread shock given that, according to the authorities, both would have been victims of a fatal confusion whose origins remain under investigation.
