Barranquilla authorities implemented a containment plan in response to the risk of reprisals following the murder of Mayra Vera, alias 'La Mona', in the municipality of Puerto Colombia, department of Atlántico.
The crime occurred on the morning of Tuesday, 9 June. The victim was the former romantic partner of alias 'Castor', according to sources consulted by El Tiempo.
Following the homicide, 'Castor' directly accused alias 'Piraña' and alias 'Rulay' of being the presumed perpetrators of the attack. This accusation raised alarm bells for authorities, who fear an escalation of violence between criminal factions in the Barranquilla metropolitan area.
For this reason, security agencies activated special protocols to prevent possible acts of retaliation that could affect the civilian population. Citizens remain on alert whilst corresponding investigations are underway.
The case has generated concern in the Caribbean region due to the history of clashes between criminal structures operating in the area. Authorities reinforced their presence in sectors considered to be at higher risk.
