Two suspects linked to the homicide of a United States citizen were captured on 26 July 2026 in Peruvian territory, according to a joint press statement issued by pe.usembassy.gov. The victim, an American Airlines flight attendant, was drugged and murdered in Medellín, Colombia.
The operation was carried out by the Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) offices in Bogotá and Lima, in conjunction with specialised units of the Colombian National Police and the Peruvian National Police. The arrests were made in compliance with orders issued by Colombian authorities.
One of the detainees was transferred to Colombia to face justice. The second remains in the custody of Peruvian authorities pending an extradition process.
The statement notes that those captured would belong to a criminal group active in Colombia, dedicated to theft and robbery of United States citizens. The United States Embassy highlighted the leadership of the Medellín Mayor's Office, the Colombian National Police and the Peruvian National Police in developing the investigation.
The case is presented by the three nations as an example of cooperation in security matters and law enforcement in the region, with the aim of guaranteeing the safety of international travellers.
