'Los Satanás' intensify extortion in Bogotá with leaflets and murders
The criminal gang known as 'Los Satanás' has resumed its extortion operations in Bogotá, according to eltiempo.com. The group uses intimidation leaflets, contract killings and orders issued directly from penitentiary centres to maintain control over its victims.
One of the most recent cases occurred in the Engativá locality, where a security guard was murdered after receiving an extortion leaflet attributed to the gang. The incident illustrates the group's modus operandi: first the written threat, then violence against those who do not comply with the demands.
The authorities have identified that the criminal structure operates with a chain of command that is not interrupted by the detention of its leaders. The leaders continue to coordinate extortion activities from prison, which hampers the complete dismantling of the organisation.
Among the populations most affected are transport workers and merchants, to whom the gang directs leaflets with warnings and imposition of forced payments. The Metropolitan Police of Bogotá and the Office of the Attorney General of the Nation have seized several of these documents as evidence.
In recent operations, the authorities succeeded in capturing the extortion coordinator for 'Los Satanás', along with six other members of the organisation. However, the gang has demonstrated the capacity to reorganise and continue its activities despite police operations.
