Costa Rican gang leader 'Gemelo' captured in Medellín for drug trafficking and homicide
The National Police detained a Costa Rican citizen in El Poblado who was wanted by INTERPOL for drug trafficking, money laundering and aggravated homicide.
'Gemelo' detained at El Poblado hotel after fleeing Costa Rica
Colombia's National Police detained a Costa Rican citizen in Medellín identified by the aliases 'Gemelo' or 'Tavo', described as one of the main leaders of a transnational criminal organisation. According to policia.gov.co, the operation was carried out inside a hotel in the El Poblado sector and was coordinated by the Criminal Investigation Directorate and INTERPOL (DIJIN), together with Migration Colombia and Costa Rican authorities.
The wanted person was circulating under an INTERPOL Red Notice and was sought by Costa Rican justice to answer for the crimes of drug trafficking, money laundering and aggravated homicide.
The entire drug trafficking chain
According to information provided by Costa Rican authorities, alias 'Gemelo' led activities related to the entire drug trafficking chain: transport, supply, storage, distribution and sale of controlled substances. Investigations also indicate that he would have used his position within the criminal structure to plan, order and coordinate homicides against people who came into conflict with the organisation.
Additionally, it was established that the detainee allegedly facilitated firearms, financial resources and vehicles for the commission of these crimes.
Left Costa Rica on 3 June
Intelligence work determined that the wanted person left Costa Rica bound for Colombia on 3 June 2026, allegedly with the purpose of evading the action of justice in his country, without registering any return migration movements.
His location was made possible thanks to the exchange of information between agencies, the administration of human sources and the use of INTERPOL databases.
Public Prosecutor's Office advances extradition procedures
The detainee was placed at the disposal of the International Affairs Directorate of the Attorney General's Office, the entity responsible for advancing the legal and diplomatic procedures to materialise his extradition or deportation to Costa Rica, in accordance with established procedures.
