Officers from the Anti-Robbery Group of the Criminal Investigation Section (SIJÍN) of the Metropolitan Police of the Aburrá Valley arrested a man in the Laureles neighbourhood of Medellín following a robbery committed against four citizens in the Laureles-Estadio sector, according to infobae.com.
The operation began on the evening of Friday, 11 September, when uniformed officers were carrying out verification duties in the area and detected two men travelling on a motorcycle who were allegedly robbing victims of their belongings.
When attempting to intercept them, the suspects responded with gunfire. The pursuit extended through several streets in the neighbourhood until officers managed to subdue one of the men at carrera 77C no. 49A-27. The second suspect managed to escape and continues to be sought by authorities.
At the time of arrest, the detained man was already in the custody of citizens who had witnessed the robbery. According to the procedure report, community members had apparently beaten him before the investigators arrived.
During the search, officers seized a lower-lethality pistol with its respective magazine and recovered gold jewellery—a chain and a bracelet—that had been stolen from the victims. The man was transported under custody to the Medellín Private Clinic, where he received medical attention for injuries sustained during the assault by citizens.
The arrested suspect, the confiscated firearm and the recovered goods were placed at the disposal of the Public Prosecutor's Office. Legal proceedings are advancing for the alleged offence of qualified and aggravated theft.
The Mayor of Medellín, Federico Gutiérrez, confirmed the arrest and highlighted the speed of the police response. "Last night, in Laureles Estadio, some citizens were victims of a robbery. The immediate reaction of our police allowed that in the response and in the exchange of gunfire, we were able to capture one of the thieves," said the official.
Gutiérrez clarified on his X account that the firearm was seized from the suspect and that the stolen gold chain and bracelet were recovered. "In Medellín the criminal is being pursued with everything we have. And although many remain, many are falling," he said.
The mayor also announced that authorities continue searching for the second suspect. "Whoever steals answers to justice. One by one they are falling. As is this other one going to fall…," Gutiérrez concluded.
The legal situation of the arrested suspect must be determined by the competent authorities within the framework of the proceedings for qualified and aggravated theft.
