Bogotá's mayor announced the convening of a regional security council with authorities from Bogotá, Soacha and Cundinamarca, according to citytv.eltiempo.com. The measure comes following the murder of Cristian Garzón, a TransMilenio security guard who was attacked after intervening to prevent a couple from entering the transport system without payment.
Approaches have already been made with the governor of Cundinamarca and the mayor of Soacha to coordinate joint actions. The initiative seeks to have the different administrations review security measures in a coordinated manner, given that the transport system also operates in the municipality of Soacha.
The official rejected the crime and noted that the actions implemented in Bogotá have achieved a reduction in some crimes at the zonal level. However, he acknowledged that those measures prove insufficient and that it is necessary to reinforce efforts to guarantee security in the public transport system.
The mayor underlined the importance of municipalities where TransMilenio operates participating actively in security strategies. The next regional council will serve to define actions that can be implemented jointly between the different jurisdictions.
Additionally, the official made a call to judicial authorities for those responsible for the murder, who have already been captured, to receive the corresponding sanctions. TransMilenio security guards have also protested in recent days over the lack of safe working conditions to carry out their work.
