Foreign man detained in Bogotá on suspicion of sexual assault against child
An adult individual of international origin was detained by law enforcement agents in the Usaquén sector, north of the Colombian capital, following a neighbourhood alert about a possible sexual assault against a child of around six years old.
The incident occurred on Sunday, 14 June inside the Niido residential complex, at the intersection of Calle 106A with Avenida 19. Residents of the area spotted from the public thoroughfare and from nearby terraces the presence of an adult with a child inside an apartment, a situation that prompted them to contact the emergency line.
Following the call, officers from the Metropolitan Police, the unit specialising in minors and the criminal investigation unit attended the scene. There they rescued the affected child, who was evacuated to a healthcare facility to receive specialised care. The suspected aggressor was placed under the surveillance of the uniformed officers, with identification and background verification procedures initiated.
Two other children were also found in the home, who were examined preliminarily at the scene and subsequently taken to a medical institution. Authorities are investigating the relationship or connection between these minors and the detainee.
The Office of the Attorney General of the Nation issued a statement rejecting the incident and urged the Prosecutor's Office, Migration Colombia, the Colombian Institute of Family Welfare and the Child Police unit to act with "speed, forcefulness and absolute priority". The Minister of Justice, Jorge Iván Cuervo, expressed on social networks that "the full weight of the law" should fall upon the person involved.
The Prosecutor's Office and the Colombian Institute of Family Welfare initiated corresponding investigations to clarify what occurred and guarantee the restoration of the rights of the minors involved.
