Community and Police capture two men for mobile phone theft in Engativá

A high-end mobile phone robbery in the Engativá locality, Bogotá, resulted in the arrest of two men thanks to the joint intervention of local residents and police officers. According to pulzo.com, citing information from the official portal Bogotá.gov.co, the incident occurred using the 'snatching' method on a motorcycle.

According to the authorities, several residents of the sector managed to detain the two alleged perpetrators when they attempted to escape on their motorcycle. During the getaway, the suspects collided with a van before being intercepted by the community, who kept them detained until police officers arrived.

Police officers attached to the Santa María del Lago Police Station (CAI) attended the scene. Upon searching the detainees, officers found a pistol with one unfired cartridge in the possession of one of them, which was immediately seized. The motorcycle used in the robbery was subsequently burned, apparently by members of the same community.

Lieutenant Colonel José Bejarano, operational commander of Citizen Safety No. 3 (E), explained the procedure: "Two people were arrested for the offence of theft and illegal possession of firearms. Thanks to the call from the community […] showing that the community had two people detained at this location. A personal search was conducted, finding a firearm of illegal origin in their possession. These individuals were arrested and the mobile phone that had been stolen moments earlier via motorcycle snatching was recovered," according to Bogotá.gov.co.

The two arrested individuals were turned over to the Public Prosecutor's Office for the alleged offences of theft and illegal possession of firearms.

The incident is part of the "Bogotá Walks Safe" strategy, aimed at strengthening security and coexistence in the capital. The National Police emphasised that citizen collaboration was crucial in achieving the arrest, and urged the community to report any suspicious activity to the emergency line 123 or visit the nearest police station.
