Aerial surveillance enables arrest for firearm and narcotics offences in Ciudad Bolívar

A man was arrested in flagrante delicto in the Gibraltar neighbourhood, in the City Bolívar district, south of Bogotá, after being detected by a Police drone during a routine surveillance operation, according to pulzo.com citing official information from Bogotá's Mayor's Office.

The operation was carried out using the Integrated System of Remotely Piloted Aircraft (SIART), an aerial monitoring platform of the Bogotá Police designed to identify suspicious conduct in areas of high criminal incidence. The system's operators detected a subject who, allegedly, was engaged in drug trafficking in the sector.

The information was transmitted in real time to ground units, which organised an intervention operation almost immediately. Upon noticing the arrival of the officers, the suspect attempted to escape via stairs in the neighbourhood. The uniformed officers managed to intercept him in the upper part of the area and cut off his escape route.

During a search, police found in the detainee's possession a revolver without the corresponding gun permit and five plastic bags containing marijuana with an approximate weight of 15 grammes. The man was arrested on suspicion of manufacture, trafficking and carrying firearms or ammunition.

Both the weapon and the seized substance, along with the detainee, were placed at the disposal of the Attorney General's Office for the corresponding judicial proceedings.

The District Secretariat of Security, Coexistence and Justice (SDSCJ) highlighted in its official channels the coordination between aerial surveillance and ground patrols as a determining factor in locating, tracking and intercepting persons allegedly linked to criminal activities. The SIART allows its operators to monitor continuously and transmit alerts in real time, which reduces police response times.

The authorities reiterated to the public the importance of reporting criminal acts or situations affecting coexistence through the Emergency Line 123.
