Explosion in Medellín police warehouse and attack in Guapi leave one injured

Two explosions shake police facilities in Colombia in less than 24 hours
Infobae.com reported that on Sunday, 20 September 2026, a powerful detonation occurred in a warehouse of the Antioquia Police Department in the city of Medellín, triggering a fire at the facilities and panic among residents of the El Volador neighbourhood.
The incident took place in a warehouse assigned to the institution's Anti-explosives Group. Despite the intensity of the explosion, the Antioquia Police Department confirmed that no police officers or civilians were injured. As a preventive measure, the authorities restricted pedestrian and vehicular access to the area to facilitate fire-control operations.
The Official Fire Department deployed to the site to handle the emergency alongside traffic and security agencies. In a statement, the Police indicated that "inspection and verification work is being carried out in order to establish the circumstances that gave rise to the situation".
Colonel Luis Muñoz, police commander in that department, stated in an interview with Blu Radio that everything would suggest an electrical fault at the facilities. "It is a matter of internal short-circuit, a bombing has been ruled out," the officer affirmed, dismissing any hypothesis of armed action against the police force.
Explosive attack in Guapi hours earlier
The explosion in Medellín occurred hours after an explosive device attack against the Guapi police station in the department of Cauca, on Saturday, 19 September at around 4:00 p.m. The incident left patrol officer Camilo de Jesús Mendoza Vuelvas wounded, who received initial care from his colleagues within the station itself.
Social leaders from Guapi, in statements to the newspaper El País, indicated that the device would have been thrown directly at the uniformed officers who were at the station. The officers reacted by adopting security measures in view of the possibility of a further attack, whilst the wounded patrol officer remained under care inside the facilities.
The authorities and community representatives recommended suspending various activities scheduled at different points in Guapi. The decision affected social and cultural events that were planned for Sunday, 20 September.
Presence of armed groups in the area
Guapi is located in a territory where authorities have warned of the presence of illegal armed structures. The Frente 30 Rafael Aguilera and the Jaime Martínez structure, both related to Farc dissident groups, operate in the area.
The authorities began investigations to determine the circumstances of the attack in Guapi, identify those responsible and establish what type of explosive was used. The investigation should clarify whether any of those structures was involved in the incident or if other parties were responsible.
