Man captured in Bogotá wearing police jacket and firearm in high-end vehicle

A 55-year-old man was detained in the Puente Aranda district of Bogotá after officers from the Santa Matilde CAI intercepted him while driving a high-end vehicle whilst wearing clothing similar to that of the National Police, according to infobae.com.

The procedure was activated during routine patrol work in a residential area. The officers noticed the car circulating in suspicious manner and stopped it to verify the driver's identity.

Upon approaching the vehicle, the officers observed that the driver was wearing a jacket and a cap of institutional use. This prompted a more detailed search of the vehicle and the driver.

"They observed a man in a vehicle who was wearing a jacket and a cap of the institution," stated Major Camilo Martínez, commander in charge of Puente Aranda Police Station.

Revolver with ammunition and history of falsity offences

During the search, officers found a 32-calibre revolver accompanied by three cartridges. The man could not legally justify either the possession of the weapon or the use of the police clothing.

"It is then that he is immediately subjected to a search of his person and the vehicle, where a firearm with three cartridges for the same is found. It should be noted that this person has records for the crimes of falsity in public documents," asserted Major Martínez.

Verification of the detainee's information revealed that the man had a history of falsity in public documents and non-payment of maintenance.

He was arrested for the crimes of illegal use of uniforms and insignia and illegal possession of firearms.

Investigation in the hands of the Public Prosecutor's Office

The man, along with the weapon and the vehicle, were handed over to the judicial authorities. The General Prosecutor's Office will need to establish how he obtained the institutional clothing and what the origin and legality of the revolver are.

"This person is placed at the disposal of the competent authorities along with the firearm and the seized vehicle. The National Police continues to carry out operational and control measures in order to prevent these incidents that affect security and peaceful coexistence in the capital," Martínez stated.

For now, the authorities have not determined whether the detainee intended to impersonate a police officer to commit a crime or whether the items found were for another purpose. The investigation seeks to establish this point.

The arrest is part of the search and control operations that the Police is carrying out in different sectors of Bogotá to detect illegal possession of weapons and unauthorised use of elements belonging to security bodies.
