The National Police arrested a 26-year-old man accused of stealing a bracelet from a woman and injuring her with a traumatic weapon in the Santa Bárbara Oriental neighbourhood, in the Usaquén locality, north of Bogotá, according to infobae.com.
The operation was made possible thanks to the immediate response of a patrol that was in the vicinity and to the support of residents in the area. Officers intercepted the suspect when he attempted to flee on a motorcycle.
Lieutenant Colonel Juan Arango, commander of the Usaquén Police Station, detailed the procedure: "The National Police in Bogotá, in recent hours, achieved the arrest of a 26-year-old person who, moments before, in the Santa Bárbara Oriental sector of the Usaquén locality, allegedly stole a bracelet from a woman and caused her an injury with a traumatic weapon. The victim is not in serious condition."
During the operation, the authorities recovered the jewellery reported as stolen, immobilised the motorcycle used in the getaway and seized the traumatic weapon. Lieutenant Arango added that "the operational result was achieved thanks to community assistance and the timely response of the service areas."
The detainee, along with the seized items, was placed at the disposal of the General Prosecutor's Office for corresponding judicial proceedings. The officer emphasised that "the operation resulted in the immobilisation of a motorcycle in which the alleged offender was travelling and the stolen item was recovered."
The man must answer for the crimes of theft and manufacture, trafficking, carrying or possession of firearms, accessories, parts or ammunition. Colonel Arango urged the public to report any incidents affecting security "through the emergency line 123."
Other recent incidents of violence in Bogotá and Soacha
In the hours prior to this arrest, a traffic control officer was dragged by a pickup truck in Soacha, in the Indumil road area, at the entrance to Quintas de la Laguna, after the driver drove forward while she was holding onto a vehicle window. The worker fell face down on the road.
Less than 24 hours later, two women were arrested in flagrante delicto for the alleged assault on a TransMilenio security guard at Avenida Chile station, north of Bogotá. Authorities arrived at the scene after receiving alerts for cries for help inside the station and found an altercation between the arrested women and the worker. Both must answer for the crime of personal injury.
The investigations aim to establish how the confrontation began, the degree of participation of each arrested person and the health status of the guard. The sequence of the operation was recorded on video.
In the images, one of the arrested women adopted a mocking attitude towards the camera during her transfer. This conduct prompted a public response from Bogotá's Security Secretariat, which stated: "However much they pose and mock, they will have to answer to justice."
The entity also recalled that, so far this year, Bogotá's Police have arrested 1,498 people for various crimes committed in the mass transit system. The department asked citizens to report any situation of intolerance or irregularity through Line 123.
