According to noticiascaracol.com, the Institute of Forensic Medicine and Legal Sciences determined, after 17 days of investigation, that Michel Dahiana Henao Chavarría, aged six, was murdered with a blunt object. The community of Buriticá, Antioquia, was shocked upon learning the result of the forensic report. It has not yet been established whether the girl was a victim of sexual abuse.
Discovery of the body
Michel was reported missing on 24 August. Her body was found on 31 August by the manager of the La Aguacatala farm, in a rural area four kilometres from her home, seven days after the search began. The worker alerted the authorities after noticing the presence of carrion birds in the area. According to his account to Teleantioquia, the only way to access the site was on foot, crossing the farm where he works. "It is a risky path, very difficult to walk, you can barely keep your footing," he said.
Rescue workers had to use harnesses and specialist equipment to recover the body. According to El Colombiano, the journey involved crossing rocky paths, stretches of dense vegetation and paths near ravines.
Hypothesis regarding the transport of the body
From the outset of the proceedings, the authorities ruled out that the girl had arrived at the site alone. Colonel Luis Fernando Muñoz, commander of the Antioquia Police, stated to Teleantioquia: "It is very probable that the girl or the body did not arrive under her own means to the point where they found her. It is three kilometres and an area that is quite rugged. They could have taken her or they could have moved the body."
Michel suffered from autism and epilepsy. Her mother informed the National Police that it was not the first time the girl had gone missing: she regularly disappeared in the afternoon hours and reappeared the next day.
Reward and context of disappearances
Before the murder was confirmed, the governor of Antioquia, Andrés Julián Rendón, offered a reward of up to 100 million pesos to clarify what happened.
According to preliminary data from the Forensic Medicine Violence Observatory, 3,668 people have been reported missing in the analysed period. Of that figure, 2,223 have not been located, 1,326 have been found alive and 119 have been found dead. Michel Dahiana's case is added to that of Ana Lucía González, a nine-year-old Venezuelan girl murdered in Bogotá.
