JEP condemns murder of former guerrilla signatory to Colombian peace accord
The Peace Tribunal rejected the killing of a Case 10 defendant linked to the defunct FARC-EP. Approximately 500 signatories have been murdered since 2016.
JEP rejects the murder of defendant before transitional justice
Colombia's Special Jurisdiction for Peace (JEP) condemned the murder of a former guerrilla signatory to the Peace Accord, according to prensa-latina.cu. The victim was meeting his obligations before Restorative Transitional Justice as a defendant of the Joint Command of the defunct Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia–People's Army (FARC-EP) in the framework of Case 10.
The tribunal warned that acts of this nature profoundly affect the families and communities of signatories, and put at risk those who, from their reincorporation process, contribute to truth, memory and reconciliation in the country.
"With the murder of defendants, the rights of victims to truth and restoration are also affected, as well as the fulfilment of contributions that those who appear before Restorative Transitional Justice must make within the framework of their processes," the JEP stated in its statement.
The court also made an urgent call to the competent authorities to clarify the facts, sanction those responsible and guarantee the protection of those who signed the accord and appear before the Jurisdiction.
According to data from Colombia's Ombudsman's Office, approximately 500 signatories of the Peace Accord have been murdered since its signature in 2016. The same body confirmed that, so far this year, at least five homicides of such persons have been recorded.
