JEP condemns murder of peace signatory in Planadas, Tolima; nearly 500 dead since 2016

JEP condemns murder of person appearing before it in Tolima and demands protection for signatories of Peace Agreement
The Special Jurisdiction for Peace (JEP) categorically condemned the homicide of Gerardo Moreno, a former guerrilla signatory to the Peace Agreement, perpetrated in a rural area of Planadas, Tolima, as reported by cronicadigital.cl on 16 September 2026.
Moreno was fulfilling his obligations before the Restorative Transitional Justice system as someone appearing before the Joint Command of the extinct Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia–People's Army in the framework of Case 10.
The tribunal warned that acts of this nature profoundly affect the families and communities of signatories, and place at risk those who, since their reincorporation process, have contributed to truth, memory and reconciliation.
"With the murder of those appearing before the tribunal, the rights of victims to truth and restoration are also affected, as well as the fulfilment of the contributions that those who appear before the Restorative Transitional Justice system must make within the framework of their processes," the JEP stated in its statement.
The entity also made an urgent call to the competent authorities to clarify the facts, sanction those responsible and guarantee the security of those who signed the agreement and appear before the Jurisdiction.
According to data from the Colombian Ombudsman's Office, nearly 500 signatories to the Peace Agreement have been murdered since its signature in 2016. The same body confirmed that, so far this year, five homicides of these individuals have been recorded.
