A 25-year-old man was apprehended at the scene in the San Pablo neighbourhood, Bosa district, after stealing a mobile telephone using a snatch-and-grab method from a high-capacity motorcycle. According to semana.com, the arrest was made possible through coordination between the community and officers from the Piamonte CAI police station.
The radio control centre alerted a patrol unit after receiving an emergency call from residents of the area. Upon arrival, officers found the man being held by several neighbourhood residents.
Victim removed the motorcycle keys
A woman immediately approached the police officers and explained that the suspect had approached her metres earlier to snatch her mobile phone whilst she was riding the motorcycle. In a risky reaction, the victim managed to lunge at the thief and remove the vehicle's keys, preventing him from starting the motorcycle to escape.
During a personal search, authorities found the stolen mobile device in the detainee's possession, valued at more than one million pesos, which was immediately returned to the victim.
Previous record for aggravated theft
The commander of the Bosa Police Station, Lieutenant Colonel Óscar Chauta, confirmed the identity of the arrested man as a 25-year-old with previous records for theft and aggravated theft. Checks on the judicial system corroborated this.
Initial intelligence investigations indicate that the detainee was not operating in isolation, but was part of a group dedicated to stealing mobile phones using the same method at strategic points in Bosa and the neighbouring Kennedy district.
After collecting physical evidence and formalising the report, the suspect was transferred and handed over to the Office of the Attorney General of the Nation to answer for the crimes charged.
More than 1,450 arrests in Bosa in 2026
Authorities highlighted that thus far in 2026 the institution has achieved more than 1,450 arrests in the Bosa district, significantly affecting urban crime structures in the south of the city. Commander Chauta stressed that coordination between timely community reporting and continuous patrols continues to generate results in the area.
