Adolescent arrested in Suba with firearm after evading youth detention centre

A 17-year-old was apprehended by the Bogotá Metropolitan Police in the El Rincón neighbourhood, Suba locality, after officers from the El Rincón CAI caught him in suspicious circumstances during patrol and background check operations, according to semana.com.

Upon noticing the presence of the uniformed officers, the adolescent attempted to flee and abandoned a suitcase he was carrying on the ground. The officers managed to intercept him and, upon searching the bag, found a .38 calibre revolver with ammunition. For this discovery, the young man was apprehended on suspicion of manufacture, trafficking or carrying of firearms.

The commander of the Suba Police Station, Lieutenant Colonel Julio Botero, confirmed that the operation forms part of an initiative to strengthen controls at key points in the north-west of the city, aimed at guaranteeing coexistence and peace in the sector.

A background check against institutional databases revealed that the adolescent had previous records for aggravated theft, stemming from acts committed in 2022, for which a judge had imposed a custodial measure at a Specialised Care Centre. The investigation determined that the young man had escaped from that youth detention centre approximately eight months before his arrest.

After being detained, the adolescent was taken before the Childhood and Adolescence Fiscal Office to proceed with judicial proceedings, the restoration of his rights and the definition of his legal situation.

The Bogotá Metropolitan Police reiterated the importance of citizen collaboration and called on the community to report any suspicious activity through the 123 line or by visiting the nearest CAI.
