Police officer shot dead in Sincelejo whilst responding to theft
Patrol officer Ader Durán Solórzano Martínez was shot dead in the early morning of Wednesday 23 September 2026 whilst responding to an alleged theft at a commercial establishment in the La María neighbourhood in Sincelejo (Sucre). According to infobae.com, the incident was confirmed by the Sucre Police Department.
The uniformed officer, a member of the Las Delicias Police Station, arrived at the scene with other agents at around 2:30 a.m. after receiving a report of a possible crime. During an inspection inside the business, a man who was inside fired at him.
His colleagues immediately transported him to a nearby clinic, where medical staff confirmed his death caused by the gunshot wound.
The alleged attacker did not manage to escape. While still at the scene, he was apprehended by the other uniformed officers present and placed at the disposal of the judicial authorities. During his arrest, a .32 calibre revolver and a bullet were found on him, which according to authorities he had used in the attack. The Office of the Attorney General took charge of conducting the corresponding judicial proceedings to determine his responsibility. For now, the identity of the arrested man and the charges that could be brought against him have not been disclosed.
The Sucre Police Department stated in its official statement that Durán Solórzano Martínez had more than ten years of service in the National Police, and that he was killed "in the line of duty".
The institution expressed its solidarity with the family, friends and colleagues of the fallen officer. "His dedication, bravery and commitment to the safety of citizens will remain forever in the memory of the National Police. We accompany with profound respect and solidarity his family, colleagues and loved ones in this painful moment," the official report stated.
Local authorities also rejected the attack in a broader statement: "Every affront against our officers is an aggression against the more than 186,000 members of the National Police who daily put their lives at risk to protect the community, guarantee their safety and provide conditions within the framework of the Constitution and the law in Colombian territory".
On social media, citizens expressed condolences and demanded justice. "May he rest in peace, hero. Much strength for his family and police colleagues," wrote one user. Other messages pointed to a broader demand: "Stop the killing of police and military, stop the killing of social leaders. We deserve to live in peace. Strong action against murderous criminals".
