The individual, known by the alias "Demonio", was found following a detailed analysis of recordings obtained from the city's surveillance system. Investigators were able to track his movements and determine his identity despite authorities saying he attempted to conceal a visible mark on his skin to hinder recognition.
Herrera worked as a journalist in Cúcuta and his death provoked rejection among journalists' associations and organisations defending press freedom in the country. The Foundation for Press Freedom (FLIP) had previously documented his journalistic work in the region.
The case adds to the concerning list of attacks against journalists in border areas, where criminal violence has particularly affected those who report on local conditions.
