De la Espriella vows to pursue those behind Uribe Turbay's murder

Colombia's president, Abelardo de la Espriella, promised on Wednesday 7 October 2026 that he would go after "all" those responsible, both materially and intellectually, for the murder of conservative senator Miguel Uribe Turbay, according to dw.com.

The president made these statements during an event held at the Centre for Brave Leadership, an institution bearing the name of the 39-year-old politician who was shot dead more than a year ago. At that same event, De la Espriella received the Brave Leader 2026 award.

"I'm going to hunt them down one by one," he said, referring to those who ordered Uribe Turbay's assassination, an up-and-coming politician who was about to run as a presidential candidate. He added that he considers it a matter of "national importance" to clarify who is behind the death, now that the person who "pulled the trigger" has already been detained.

De la Espriella went further and suggested possible responsibility on the part of the left-wing opposition. He argued that the criticism levelled against Uribe Turbay by former president Gustavo Petro amounted to "the order" to assassinate him, and noted that his death "served the regime that he was denouncing".

The president also recalled that, had he survived the attack, Uribe Turbay would have been the rival to defeat in the elections that De la Espriella himself won last June. "He would have been a great president," he stressed.

During the event, De la Espriella proposed that a square in Colombia be named after Miguel Uribe Turbay. He also announced that Miguel Uribe, father of the murdered senator, will be appointed Colombian ambassador to the United Kingdom.

The death of the senator, grandson of former liberal president Julio César Turbay—who governed between 1978 and 1982—became a symbol of the political violence shaking the country, exacerbated during the last election campaign.
