Fled along the Fucha River after the robbery, but police captured him metres away

A 25-year-old man was apprehended in the San Cristóbal district in southern Bogotá after allegedly participating in the theft of 60 million pesos from a 65-year-old elderly man. According to infobae.com, the suspect attempted to escape from officers by jumping into the Fucha River, but was intercepted metres further downstream.

The incident occurred after the victim withdrew money from a financial institution located in the 20 de Julio sector. According to the official report from the Metropolitan Police of Bogotá (Mebog), issued on Friday 10 October 2026, three individuals allegedly followed the elderly man and intercepted him as he was passing through the Ramajal neighbourhood.

The assailants were travelling on two motorcycles. According to the police report, they intimidated the victim with a firearm before snatching the money and fleeing through the streets of the sector.

Community alert led police to activate operation

The alert from residents of the sector allowed officers patrolling the area to activate an operation to locate the suspected perpetrators of the robbery. During the pursuit, one of the suspects made a decision that failed to prevent his capture.

Lieutenant Colonel Cristian Velásquez, commander of the San Cristóbal Police Station, detailed what occurred: "This person, when trying to flee, attempts to throw himself into the Fucha River". The man entered the waterway with the intention of getting away from the officers, but was intercepted just metres ahead.

The detainee was handed over to the Public Prosecutor's Office and presented before a judge of guarantees, who imposed a detention measure in a penitentiary establishment. The authorities indicated that the man has a criminal record for homicide and aggravated theft offences.

The bank offered escort service, but the victim declined it

Police revealed that the financial institution offered the citizen an escort service to transport the money before leaving the bank. The man chose not to accept it.

"It is important to note that the financial institution offered the person an escort service and the person did not accept the escort," stated Lieutenant Colonel Velásquez.

Police escort for large withdrawals aims to reduce the risk of robberies during the journey between financial institutions and the destination. The institution reiterated the recommendation to request the service before carrying out transactions involving significant amounts of money.

The authorities must establish how those responsible learned of the withdrawal, whether they followed the victim from the 20 de Julio sector and what the specific participation of the detained man was.
