Police major in Bogotá detained on suspicion of sexual abuse
In a separate case, Judge 73 of the Municipal Court of Bogotá ordered the detention of Major of the National Police Michael Bedoya Rivera, investigated following a report of alleged sexual abuse against a young woman. The decision became final after the officer's defence submitted an appeal on 4 August, during the continuation of the guarantees control hearing.
The reported facts allegedly occurred in March 2026 in an apartment at the National Police fiscal housing located in the La Castellana neighbourhood of Bogotá. According to the account given at the hearing, a friend of the complainant received a social media invitation from the major to go out with the young woman. A patrol officer transported them to the fiscal residences reserved for officers of the institution.
The complainant stated that she lost consciousness after consuming four shots of alcohol. Upon regaining awareness, she went to a medical centre, where the protocol for cases of sexual violence was activated. This procedure forms part of the elements surrounding the report and will be evaluated within the criminal proceedings.
Despite the appeal filed by the defence at the proceeding on 4 August, the detention measure against Bedoya Rivera remained in effect. The decision does not determine his criminal responsibility, which must be established in subsequent stages of the judicial process.
The investigation must clarify the circumstances of the meeting, the transport of the two women, and what occurred following the consumption of alcohol in the apartment where the officer was located. In the meantime, Bedoya Rivera will remain subject to the measure ordered by the guarantees control judge.
