A police operation in the early hours of Tuesday, 15 September resulted in an exchange of gunfire on Regional Avenue, at the level of the Envigado municipality, between Sabaneta and Medellín. According to infobae.com, the events sparked panic among drivers and pedestrians, and caused the partial closure of that thoroughfare in the Aburrá Valley Metropolitan Area.
Nocturnal robberies activate Plan Candado
The chain of events began the previous night. Two men allegedly robbed motorcycles in separate incidents: one in Sabaneta and another in the San Antonio de Prado district. The proximity between both cases led the Aburrá Valley Metropolitan Police to activate a Plan Candado to locate the two suspects and prevent them from leaving the area.
During the early morning hours, uniformed officers located the two individuals said to be responsible. Both were occupying motorcycles that had been reported as stolen.
Pursuit and gunfire in the roadway
The flight of the suspects began in Sabaneta jurisdiction, where the adolescent—17 years old—began firing at police officers who were following them, according to the version provided by authorities. The pursuit continued towards Envigado.
Upon entering that municipality, the two suspects again opened fire against the police patrol, according to the official report. Uniformed officers responded to the attack in the middle of the roadway, in front of the Viva Envigado Shopping Centre.
The exchange of gunfire extended along that corridor. The 17-year-old minor was seriously wounded and lay in the middle of the roadway. The 18-year-old was detained at the scene.
Chaos on the roadway and movement restrictions
The confrontation caused fear among drivers and pedestrians who were travelling through the sector during the early morning hours. Regional Avenue was partially closed whilst the procedure proceeded, generating severe vehicular congestion on one of the main corridors of the metropolitan area.
Wounded under custody; captured with outstanding arrest order
The injured adolescent was urgently transferred to a medical facility. He remains there under the custody of the Children and Adolescent Police, according to the report known following the operation. His legal status will be determined once his medical condition permits, following procedures applicable to minors.
The 18-year-old remained at the disposal of the competent authorities. Verification of criminal records revealed he had an outstanding arrest order related to an incident in 2019. "He had a judicial authority requirement," the Police stated in a statement, indicating that the record corresponded to an assault against a traffic officer.
The Aburrá Valley Metropolitan Police detailed the finding in their report: "During the verification of criminal records, it was also established that the 18-year-old man had a judicial authority requirement for an incident that occurred in 2019, related to an assault against a traffic officer".
Weapons and motorcycles seized as evidence
Following the capture, uniformed officers seized a firearm related to the confrontation, according to official information. They also recovered the two motorcycles stolen in Sabaneta and San Antonio de Prado. All items were placed in custody to be incorporated into the judicial process.
The Police indicated that those involved would face charges for qualified and aggravated theft, and would also be linked to manufacture, trafficking, carrying or possession of firearms, accessories, parts or ammunition. The initial circumstances that triggered the pursuit remain under investigation.
