Armed groups with presence in the area
According to Indepaz, armed structures operating in the territory of El Paujíl include the Front 62 Comandante Rodrigo Cadete of the General Staff of Blocs and Fronts, the Border Commands and locally-based criminal gangs. The area falls under the jurisdiction of the Sixth Division of the National Army.
The organisation also recalled that the Office of the Human Rights Ombudsman issued Early Alert 011 in 2022, which warned of disputes over territorial control between armed groups in El Paujíl and the risks resulting from their expansion in the region.
Risks for rural communities
Among the impacts identified in that alert are pressures on rural communities, the imposition of rules of conduct, the instrumentalisation of the civilian population and the deterioration of community organisational dynamics.
With the attack on 12 October, Indepaz has accumulated 98 massacres recorded in Colombian territory during the current year, according to the organisation's official records.
