Google News CU — Crime reports a digital scam method that is spreading in Cuba: criminals gain unauthorised access to WhatsApp accounts and, impersonating the legitimate account holder, request money transfers from their contacts.
The mechanism is simple but effective. Once they have taken control of the account, the scammer sends messages to the victim's family and friends claiming an urgent need for money, exploiting the trust placed in the original account holder.
According to a report from CiberCuba, victims who file complaints with the authorities receive no response or effective follow-up from the police, leaving those affected without institutional means of redress.
The absence of a police response to these cases deepens the vulnerability of Cuban users to cybercrime, in a context where access to messaging platforms and digital transfers has grown steadily on the island.
