Operation in Guane ends with agent and suspect wounded by gunshot
An officer of the Special Brigade of the Ministry of Interior (MININT) was wounded by a gunshot to the left arm during a police operation in the municipality of Guane, Pinar del Río, according to cibercuba.com.
The objective of the operation was to capture a man from Cienfuegos, sought by justice for theft with force offences. Authorities had received information that the suspect was hiding in a dwelling in the Guane People's Council.
Personnel from the Special Brigade, the Technical Investigation Directorate (DTI) and other police units deployed to the scene to proceed with his detention. During a search of the premises, the suspect drew a pistol and opened fire on the agents, hitting one of them in the left arm.
The police officers responded with rubber bullets, with which they wounded the fugitive. Both the officer and the detainee were taken to a hospital centre; neither of the two would be in danger of death, according to the same source.
During the operation, the agents seized the firearm used in the attack and more than 300,000 Cuban pesos. That money allegedly came from a theft committed at a dwelling in the Isabel Rubio People's Council, also in the municipality of Guane.
The incident was made public by the Facebook page "De Pinar Soy", a profile linked to the provincial MININT. To date, the MININT has not issued any official statement or released medical reports on the circumstances of the confrontation, and the identity of the wounded officer has not been revealed.
