Sigmalive.com reports a new scam case involving fraudulent messages about alleged demand notice fines, with a 37-year-old woman from Paphos as the victim.
According to a complaint filed at the Paphos Traffic Police, the woman received a text message on 22 September regarding an undisclosed demand notice fine of 60 euros, which allegedly concerned a traffic violation. She followed the link included in the message and entered her bank card details on an unknown website.
When the transaction was completed, she discovered her account had been charged €2,000 — thirty-three times more than the amount she had originally been asked to pay. The case is being investigated by the Financial Crime Investigation Bureau of the Paphos Traffic Police.
Following this latest incident, police emphasise that they never contact citizens via SMS or other platforms regarding fine payment. The public is advised not to follow links included in unsolicited messages and not to enter personal or banking details on unknown websites.
To verify any messages, police urge citizens to contact the responsible authorities directly through their official communication channels.
