Larnaca police are investigating a report of abduction of a 22-year-old foreign student after an unknown person contacted his father demanding money for his release.
The case came to light just before 1:00 am on Friday morning, when the young man's flatmate contacted the authorities to report his disappearance.
According to information being examined, the 22-year-old, who resides in Larnaca, left his home at around 6:30 pm on Thursday evening to attend the first day of work at a factory.
The exact location of the workplace has not yet been clarified.
A few hours later, the student's father, who lives abroad, is reported to have received a telephone call and a series of messages from an unknown person demanding money for the release of his son.
The authorities are treating the report as a suspected abduction and have launched an investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding the young man's disappearance and the origin of the ransom demand.
Investigators are examining the communications received by the father and are attempting to locate the 22-year-old following his departure from his home on Thursday evening.
The authorities have not disclosed the amount reportedly requested nor have they provided details regarding the identity of the suspects.
No arrests have been announced and the investigation continues.
