The 43-year-old Russian Alexei Sokpa, who was being sought for the murder of Vangelis Zambuni, was arrested in the Esentepe area of Occupied Cyprus, according to reports.

As reported by the Cyprus News Agency, the 43-year-old was brought before a "court" in the occupied territory, where he was charged with illegal residence and violation of a "military restricted zone".

A spokesman for the pseudo-state's "police" stated that Sokpa was illegally in the occupied territory for 389 days. He claimed that Sokpa had escaped to free areas via Tymvos and returned in the same manner in July. The "court" issued an order for three days' detention, whilst he is being investigated for possible involvement in other crimes.

The murder of Vangelis Zambuni was committed on 14 January 2024 outside a petrol station at the junction of Frantzi and Ilias Iliou Streets in Neos Kosmos. The Greek Police released Sokpa's details and photograph on 1 August, following an order from the Public Prosecutor's Office of Athens First Instance Court, seeking information regarding further action by him. An international arrest warrant had been issued against him.
