A 27-year-old woman reported to the Paphos Police Station yesterday, alleging that unknown individuals defrauded her of digital currency worth twelve thousand dollars. The police are investigating the case as an economic crime involving false pretences.
According to Politis, the woman posted a request for assistance in a group discussion on a social media website regarding cryptocurrency transactions. Individuals she did not know approached her online, offering to help her.
Through persuasive arguments, the fraudsters convinced her to send digital currency to them in three separate transactions. When the money she was expecting did not appear in her bank account, she realised she had been defrauded.
The Economic Crime Investigation Unit took over the investigation. The authorities are reminding internet users that they must exercise caution, as anyone could be hiding behind every online profile.
