Larnaca: Investigation into abduction of 22-year-old Bangladeshi student – ransom demanded
Detectives in Larnaca are conducting an investigation into the disappearance of a young man aged 22, a Bangladeshi national, who was studying on the island. The case was brought to light following a report made by his flatmate in the early hours of Friday.
According to what the flatmate reported, the student left their home in Oroklini on Thursday afternoon at approximately 6:30 p.m. He had been scheduled to report for the first time to an industrial unit in the Kofinou area, where he had found work. However, he never showed up there.
That same evening, the missing student's father – who lives in Greece – received contact from a person who demanded a sum of money in order for his son to be released. The contact was made via telephone call and text messages.
The competent authorities are examining multiple possibilities. They are taking statements from people who knew the young man to determine whether he had financial disputes with anyone. In parallel, they are attempting to locate his mobile phone, whilst retrieving material from security cameras to reconstruct the route he took. The 22-year-old had sent his location to acquaintances before he went missing.
The prosecuting authorities are maintaining contact with his father in Greece. It remains unclear exactly what happened to the young man.
