Two fires broke out in the Korno area, on the Limassol-Nicosia motorway, ahead of the start of the cup final between Apollon and Paphos FC. According to philenews, police have attributed the incidents to the throwing of flares and fireworks by supporters.
The first fire broke out at the level of Kakoratsia. Fire service personnel rushed to the scene and managed to control it. A short time later, a second fire broke out near the GSP Stadium, which is also linked to the throwing of incendiary materials by supporters. This fire was also brought under control.
Tensions also prevailed upon the arrival of organised Apollon Limassol supporters at the GSP Stadium. The situation was defused following intervention by police forces stationed there to maintain order. Temporarily the situation got out of hand and the "Ajax" vehicle was used to disperse the crowd and restore calm.
Thousands of supporters were heading to the capital for the final, whilst in several instances they were throwing fireworks and flares. The authorities remain on standby ahead of the match.
