A district court on Monday sentenced eighty-year-old lawyer Hana Suková and her daughter Pavla Marešová to prison for embezzling financial assets held in lawyer trust accounts. The older of the two women will serve a seven-year sentence, the younger 5.5 years. The court has simultaneously banned both from practising law for ten years. The judgment is not yet final.

According to the charges, the women abused their clients' trust and embezzled a total of more than 161 million crowns from them. These funds were supposed to be held in lawyer trust accounts, but the women used them for their own purposes. Police were unable to locate the missing money.

Hana Suková worked as a lawyer for several decades. Together with her daughter, they managed trust accounts into which clients deposited substantial sums as part of various business transactions and legal matters. The investigation revealed systematic withdrawal of these funds.

The court found both women guilty of the criminal offence of embezzlement. The case attracted attention due to the high sum involved and the long-standing position of the defendant in the legal community. Police continue to search for where the money disappeared to.
