Detectives have drawn attention to several long-term unresolved disappearances of young children. Although most missing minors are found within a short period of time, these particular cases remain a mystery.
Among those mentioned is Jan Nejedlý, who went missing in mid-January more than a quarter of a century ago. He was only ten years old at the time. He left his flat in Prague's Podolí to go to a schoolmate's house. The distance between the two homes was approximately one hundred metres. On the way, he even met his paediatrician, who was out walking his dog. However, he never arrived at his destination.
His sister vividly recalls that tragic evening. "He asked mum if he could go outside to see his friend. I wanted to go with him, but I was little and mum wouldn't let me. That evening the police were already here and everyone was rushing around the house," she recalls.
The boy's father described the search operation shortly after the incident: "He was supposed to come home at five o'clock. When he didn't show up, we started looking for him about half an hour after sunset. We searched the cliffs above the Vltava, ran along the river with torches." Despite the intensive search, Jan was never found. Today he would be a middle-aged man.
The second case occurred in the Chomutov region two decades ago. An eight-year-old boy fell into swollen water while playing with friends. "We were throwing boxes into the river. Honza slipped. I tried to give him my hand, but he pulled me in with him," recalls one of the children who managed to reach the shore. Little Jan disappeared beneath the surface and his body has not been found to this day.
Police regularly publicise these old cases in the hope that someone will come forward with new information.
