A regional court in Ostrava has sentenced a man to ten years in prison for selling fentanyl patches to a married couple. Both died after consuming a combination of fentanyl with alcohol and other medicines.

The regional court in Ostrava on Tuesday delivered a verdict in the case of the death of a married couple from Kopřivnice. Thirty-nine-year-old Petr Vašenda was sentenced to ten years in prison with enhanced security for selling fentanyl patches, the use of which led to the death of both spouses.
The defendant sold the couple patches containing a powerful opioid. The man and woman subsequently combined the substance with alcohol and other medicines, which had tragic consequences. According to the defence, it was a case of suicide.
However, the court concluded that the sale of a dangerous substance constitutes a serious criminal offence warranting a severe sentence. The case highlights the danger of illegal trafficking in fentanyl, which ranks among the strongest synthetic opioids.
