A man convicted of murdering his wife and eight-year-old child has filed another motion to reopen the case. Petr Kramný was sentenced to 28 years in prison by the court, but he continues to deny committing the crime. The Regional Court in Ostrava has now received his third request for a retrial.
The tragedy took place in July 2013 at a hotel by the Red Sea. The bodies of thirty-six-year-old Monika and little Klára were discovered in the room. The husband and father had accompanied the relatives. Initially, food poisoning was considered. Czech police later concluded that the women were killed by an electric shock. Egyptian doctors rejected this hypothesis and identified the cause of death as poisoning by an unknown substance.
In 2016, the court sentenced Kramný to 28 years. The evidence situation was complicated — there was no murder weapon and no direct traces linking the perpetrator to the scene. The judge cited the wife's infidelity as the motive. The convicted man defended himself against the verdict by appeal and twice unsuccessfully requested a new hearing — in 2018 and 2023.
Now the defence is focusing on doubts regarding a revised forensic report. The Šalamoun association, which deals with possible judicial errors, submitted expert assessment. According to it, the experts' procedure contained such serious deficiencies that the resulting report cannot serve as reliable evidence.
"The Regional Court in Ostrava received a motion to permit a retrial in the case of the convicted Petr Kramný. However, the procedural course cannot be predicted at this time. The presiding judge must familiarise himself with the matter and then decide on the further procedural course," said a court spokesman. The report was published by the Aktuálně.cz server.
In connection with the case, defence experts were also punished for providing distorted information, according to the court's ruling.
