A train in Česká Lípa hit stones placed on the rails in the Česká Lípa shooting range – Nový Bor section on Monday evening, according to nasregion.cz. Approximately twenty passengers survived the incident without injury, confirmed police spokeswoman Dagmar Sochorová.
Traffic on the line between Česká Lípa and Nový Bor was interrupted following the incident. Martin Kavka, spokesman for the Rail Authority, precisely identified the location of the incident. According to Sochorová, the extent of the damage is the subject of an ongoing investigation.
This is not the first case. An almost identical situation occurred on 23 September in the evening at roughly the same location. The driver of a train heading from Nový Bor to Česká Lípa noticed stones approximately ten to twenty centimetres in size in an inclined left-hand bend below the Sever housing estate and immediately applied the emergency brake. The train slowed considerably and came to a halt after one hundred metres, although part of the stones were still run over. The damage to the wheels of the driving carriage reached at least one hundred thousand crowns.
As spokeswoman Ivana Baláková pointed out at the time, stones had appeared in this location twice already in the previous year, always with a very similar course of events. Police are investigating the case as endangerment of the public. Investigators have so far failed to clarify any of these incidents.
They have therefore turned to the public for help. Anyone who noticed anything suspicious in the vicinity of the railway line below the Sever housing estate on Wednesday 23 September between 16:00 and 17:30 can report the information on the emergency line 158.
