Liberec court to rule on conditional release of Čermák, convicted of terrorism
The District Court in Liberec rules today on Tomáš Čermák's request for conditional release from a 5.5-year prison sentence for promotion of terrorism.
Čermák seeks release after serving more than half of terrorism sentence
The District Court in Liberec is hearing a request from Tomáš Čermák for conditional release today, ceskenoviny.cz reports. Čermák was sentenced to 5.5 years in prison for support and promotion of terrorism and has currently served more than half of this sentence.
During the coronavirus pandemic period, Čermák publicly called for violence against politicians, thereby exceeding the limits of freedom of expression. In a live broadcast on Facebook, he expressed opposition to amendments to pandemic legislation and urged viewers of the half-hour video to actively resist, seize power, burn down the Senate, and detach the Czech Republic from the structures of the EU and NATO. He identified senators, deputies and government members as principal targets and declared, among other things, that "we must gag those beasts" and "we will drag them out by their snouts and throw them in the river".
Čermák became the first person in Czechia to be definitively convicted and imprisoned for support and promotion of terrorism. He evaded the start of his sentence and police tracked him down through an international warrant, apprehending him on 14 November 2023 in Poland. The Czech police took him into custody on 4 December of the same year at the Chotěbuz–Cieszyn border crossing.
In addition to the terrorist criminal offence, Čermák and Patrik Tušl were sentenced three years ago for inciting hatred towards Ukrainians on social networks and for disorderly conduct outside the home of evolutionary biologist Jaroslav Flegr. In the matter of hateful statements about Ukrainians, Čermák received a suspended sentence, while Tušl was sentenced to ten months in prison.
