Louny court judges on Tuesday handed down a verdict against a pair who brutally abused a boy who was then only three years old. The child's mother Kristýna H. and her former partner Zdeněk N. will serve four years in prison. The verdict is not final; both may appeal against it.
According to the case file, the couple verbally abused the boy and physically attacked him several times a week. The violence was so intense that they caused the child to suffer broken ribs and a broken elbow. At the time of the incidents, the boy was just three years old. He is now four years old and his health is gradually improving.
During the main trial, both defendants accused each other. Each blamed the other and denied their own involvement in the abuse. The judge, when explaining the verdict, stated that the evidence proves that both parental figures were accomplices. Before the court, both defendants acted confusedly and attempted to minimise their role.
Police investigated the case for several months. Evidence included medical reports documenting the child's injuries, statements from neighbours, and expert assessments from the field of child psychology. The expert stated that the boy's suffering was prolonged and systematic.
When imposing the sentence, the court took into account the severity of the offence and the vulnerability of the victim. The four-year sentence of imprisonment corresponds to the standard sentence for the crime of abuse of a person in one's care. The judge emphasised that both perpetrators abused the child's trust, which had no ability to defend itself or confide in anyone.
The child is now in the care of relatives. The court will decide on his future placement in separate proceedings. Social workers recommended that the boy be cared for by his grandparents, who looked after him during the time when the mother and partner were under investigation.
