Man sentenced to 13.5 years for strangling girlfriend in pipeline in Frýdek-Místek
Thirty-seven-year-old Tomáš Šindar strangled his girlfriend, one year his junior, in an underground hot-water pipeline in Frýdek-Místek. The Regional Court in Ostrava sentenced him to 13.5 years in prison under enhanced supervision.

Thirty-seven-year-old Tomáš Šindar from Havířov will serve thirteen and a half years in prison under enhanced supervision. The Ostrava Regional Court approved a guilty plea and sentencing agreement on Monday, according to which the man strangled his girlfriend of one year his junior with his bare hands last night between 1 and 2 September. The act took place underground, in a hot-water pipeline that both inhabited together.
The couple was homeless and their relationship had lasted for many years. According to state prosecutor Vít Legerský, however, it was disrupted by excessive alcohol consumption and use of pervitin. On the day of the murder, the man was also due to begin a prison sentence for causing serious bodily harm, and another proceeding was underway against him concerning theft.
When both lay down to sleep, the man began reproaching his partner that she was not engaging in their situation and did not care about anything. The woman remained silent and only said that he was wrong. This enraged the man – he first struck her twice in the face, then lay on top of her and choked her under the neck for several minutes. He stopped only when she ceased to resist.
He then climbed to the surface, where he encountered acquaintances. He told them what he had just done. Police arrived at the scene and attempted to revive the woman, but the doctor could only confirm death. The perpetrator was detained practically immediately. Because he was under the influence of alcohol, he first ended up in a sobering-up facility.
The man confessed to everything and cooperated with the criminal proceedings authorities. "We will not appeal," said his defence lawyer Sebastián Čapucha after the verdict. In addition to the custodial sentence, he must pay compensation to the victims of approximately 2.3 million crowns. The money will go to the murdered woman's mother, sister, and underage son.
