The Regional Court in Hradec Králové began hearing on Monday a case involving a young man who brutally assaulted his grandmother on New Year's Eve 2024 in one of the smaller villages near Jaroměř in the Náchodsko region. The twenty-six-year-old man attacked a woman fifty years his senior, who was confined to a wheelchair. Alcohol and drugs were in the background.
Everything began with a quarrel over turning off the television. The prosecution states that the grandson entered the room after smashing the glass panel of the door with a plastic bottle. He demanded that the woman turn off the television because he wanted to go to sleep.
He then smashed the television and threw the elderly woman out of her wheelchair directly onto the shards from the broken door. He subsequently injured her with glass shards in the buttock area. State prosecutor Lenka Faltusová further stated that the attack was accompanied by sexually motivated behaviour and vulgar remarks. The man allegedly told the woman that he could do something with her, but that he found her disgusting because she could not move independently.
He then went to his own room. The victim took the opportunity and called for help by phone. However, when the grandson returned with a bottle of Jägermeister, the attack continued. "He struck her in the head three times. By this action he caused her an injury that required treatment and subsequent hospitalisation in hospital," Faltusová added.
During the preparatory proceedings the accused did not give a statement. In court, however, he admitted that he had behaved terribly. He claimed he was not aware of how drugs affected his behaviour. "What happened is terrible. I know I am responsible for it myself. I want to compensate my grandmother as soon as possible, to pay her damages and help her," he said at the hearing.
