Thirty-seven-year-old Tomáš Š. from Karviná will serve thirteen and a half years in a correctional facility with enhanced security. For the killing of his partner Barbora, one year his junior, in Frýdek-Místek, he faced a sentence of ten to eighteen years. The Regional Court in Ostrava approved the plea agreement this week, which the defendant signed with the prosecutor. The agreement also included compensation worth several million crowns for the survivors.
The murder took place on the night of 1 to 2 September last year. The man strangled his partner in a basement space containing heating pipes, where they lived together. He was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crime. After the act, he ran outside, where he encountered acquaintances and told them what had happened. Police officers arrived quickly and attempted to revive the woman, but their efforts were in vain. The perpetrator attempted to flee from the officers but was immediately apprehended. Because he was intoxicated, he was first taken to a sobering-up centre.
The tragedy was caused by disagreements in their relationship. Tomáš Š. was disturbed that his partner did not respond to his reproaches. In a fit of rage, he began strangling her and did not stop until she stopped moving. Only then did he realise that she was dead.
The accused confessed to the crime and demonstrated a willingness to cooperate. The court imposed a sentence at the lower end of the range. The man has several previous convictions.
