A 65-year-old huntsman faces charges of grievous bodily harm through negligence. Tachov criminal investigators charged him in June for an incident that occurred last August in woodland near Ctibor in the Tachov district.
The man set out to hunt a fox. When firing, however, he not only aimed at the animal, but also struck a metal detectorist who was in the area at the time. The shooter thereby caused the injured party serious wounds.
Police investigated the case for several months. In June, criminal investigators concluded that there was reasonable suspicion of a criminal offence. Tachov police spokeswoman Iva Vršecká informed the public of the charges.
Should he be convicted, the huntsman faces a prison sentence of up to four years. The case highlights the risks associated with shooting in terrain where other people may be present, such as collectors, tourists or mushroom pickers.
